LHS Blood Drive
The Community Blood Center is the primary supplier of blood for local hospitals and has been serving Missouri and Kansas hospitals for almost 50 years. The Center needs to collect 580 pints of blood every day and over 140,000 pints annually to meet the needs of our local hospitals. Someone in the area that the Community Blood Center serves needs a blood transfusion every 4 minutes.
You have the opportunity to do your part for local hospital patients at the next Community Blood Center drive held at Liberty High School in the Gymnasium, 200 Blue Jay Drive, Liberty, Missouri on Thursday, February 11 from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Donors may come at any time or they may make an appointment online by going to www.esavealifenow.org and use Sponsor Code libertyhs. For more information, please contact Rick Knowles at 816-736-6800, ext. 2019 or any LHS AP Biology student.

Thursday, February 11. 7:00a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym
How do I donate?
Any A.P. Biology Student can sign you up or sign up on the pink sheet outside Mr. Knowles¡¯ room 209.
If you are 17, please be sure to pick up a permission slip and turn it in to Mr. Knowles, an A.P. Bio Student or bring it with you to the donation.
The KC metro area needs at least 580 pints per day;
LHS meets 40% of the daily need in one drive.
During the school year high schools make up 25% of needed blood.
One blood donation can be separated into two components, giving every donor the potential to save two lives with a single donation.
Who can donate?
IN MISSOURI- Anyone who is healthy, 16 years of age or older, and weighs at least 110 pounds.
(You may donate every 8 weeks)
AT LHS- Because of the volume of students who turn out for this opportunity, we must limit our donors to 17+.
Teachers and community members are free to come at their convenience and will be given priority. They need not register.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Make sure to drink a lot of water 2-3 days ahead of time, this will thin the blood and make the donating process easier. |
Passing out during donation is NOT common. It is mostly psychological or the result of not eating a good breakfast. |
Eat a healthy breakfast!! |
| You must have a signed permission slip if you are 17. Return to whoever registered you or bring it to the drive on Feb. 22. |
| You must have a photo I.D. with birth date on it. |
Donation Process |
Your temperature and blood pressure will be taken. A couple of weeks after the donation, you will receive notification of your blood type and a free cholesterol screening. |
If any medical problems are found during the testing of your blood, you will be notified. (NOT your parents, only you. It is strictly confidential.) |
No holding hands during the donation process- this causes traffic problems for the nurses and more stress for the donor. |
99% of the blood collected stays in this area and is distributed to local hospitals by the Community Blood Center. The CBC serves more than 75 hospitals in Missouri and Kansas and offers the blood free of charge. |
Nurses will be on-hand to take your blood; it is NOT done by the AP Biology students. |
About .5 liters of blood will be taken during the donation process; this is only a mere 8% of the total blood in your body. |
| Avoid drinking any type of tea a couple days before donation. (Tea contains tannins which can absorb iron) |
Donation will take about 15 minutes. |
You will be given refreshments after donation to raise your blood sugar. |
| You may sit and rejuvenate as long as you need after donation. |
